Scholarships Have an Important Role in Student Recruitment and Retention

The MSU Foundation plays a major role in providing financial support for students who enroll at Mayville State University. The foundation’s support through annual scholarships, endowed awards, and restricted funding has made it much easier to recruit high ability students and to retain those already here.

Many worthy students are being rewarded for their academic performance and are receiving assistance with their college expenses. These scholarships are helping students attain their educational goals while assisting the institution with enrollment and retention. This would not be possible without the financial support of our alumni and friends.

Approximately 70 new freshmen and 10 new transfer students are benefiting from Honor and Leadership Scholarships awarded for 2009-10. The total amount of these awards for the current year is $71,500, with an average award of $894. In addition, eight returning students will receive Presidential and Honor awards totaling $20,595. Seventeen returning students are receiving Dollars for Scholars matching awards of up to $250 each for 2009-10. Total Dollars for Scholars matching awards equal $4,200. In addition, the first new four-year renewable scholarship of $2,000 has been awarded this year.

The MSU Foundation will fund approximately $107,655 in 240+ endowed and restricted scholarships for 2009-10. Funding for endowed scholarships comes from interest generated on a principal amount. Restricted scholarships are designated for a particular named or limited purpose. Many of the awards this year are going to upper-class students. In many cases, the respective academic departments are involved in selecting the recipients.

In addition, music scholarships totaling $25,900 for choir and band participants are going to 73 students. These scholarships have been instrumental in the growth and success of our music program at Mayville State.

This year, total expenditures for academic scholarships from MSU Foundation sources will amount to $229,850, compared to $208,918 in 2008-09, $169,128 in 2007-08, $152,156 in 2006-07, and $122,736 in 2005-06. Support for academic scholarships by the MSU Foundation has more than tripled since 2004-05 when $72,046 was provided. This attests to the tremendous efforts that donors and the MSU Foundation board have made to reward qualified students.

The total amount of academic and athletic scholarships for new students and returning students selected for renewals/matches will be approximately $394,724 for 2009-10, all funded through annual allocations from the MSU Foundation, including Comet Athletic Club.

Student recruitment for the 2010-2011 school year is in full swing. Our coaches and student recruiters are meeting with prospective students every day. The ability to offer scholarships to potential students has a direct impact on whether a student chooses to enroll at Mayville State University.

We anticipate a need for even more support for academic and music scholarships for students enrolling for the 2010-2011 academic year. Fund-raising efforts to generate scholarship restricted and general scholarship dollars for new and returning students are underway. The MSU Foundation’s fall scholarship fund drive will begin soon, and the Comet Athletic Club is working diligently to generate athletic scholarship dollars through their activities and membership drive.

Attracting and retaining high quality students is very important to Mayville State’s future. The financial support for scholarships provided by Mayville State alumni and friends is vital to the success of the university. We are very grateful to the generous people who are making a difference in the lives of students while making an impact at Mayville State.
